This page is about repeat prostate infections
The prostate is really a gland that is a vital component of the male sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's overriding function is to first produce and then store a see-through fluid that is a component of semen. A non-diseased man's prostate gland is slightly heftier in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal examination.
Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is termed prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can impede the urine stream, making urination painful and difficult and in severe cases entirely impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or surgical measures.
In men who are older, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with the use of medication or with even operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One common operation used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).
Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most frequent cancers to strike older men and a major cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to pick up prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a lab blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Elevated pSA blood results may be an indicator of disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for your physician to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical measures. It has just recently been noticed that drugs such as Docetaxel could be helpful in the treatment of prostate cancer.
Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical or primarily for sexual purposes.
