The prostate is a gland that is an important part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. Its predominant function is to produce and store a clear fluid that is an important part of seminal fluid (semen). A sound human's prostate is a bit larger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can jam up the urine stream, making urination difficult and painful and in extreme cases wholly impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, massage of the prostate or even surgery.

In older men, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination is difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with medicinal drugs or with even operations that removes a component of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that strikes elderly men and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that can measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised test results could signify disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause a physician to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even operations. It has just recently been detected that medicines including Docetaxel can be helpful in the treatment of prostate cancer.
