The prostate gland is a vital part of the male sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's predominant job is to first secrete and then store a transparent liquid that is a vital part of semen. A normal individual's prostate is somewhat bigger than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during a rectal examination.
Inflammation of the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can stop urine flow, making urination difficult and very painful and in very severe cases completely impossible. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or even surgical procedures.
In older-aged males, the prostate can grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with different types of medicines or with operations that removes a component of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).
Cancer of the prostate is one of the most common cancers that affects older-aged men and a major cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer early. There can be also a lab blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Raised test results might suggest disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead your physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical measures. It has only recently been observed that medications like Docetaxel may be effective in the treatment of cancer.
Stimulation of the prostate gland in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical or primarily for sexual purposes.
