The prostate is really a gland that is a vital component of the sex organs of the male. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate's leading function is to secrete and then store a clear liquid that is a vital part of semen (seminal fluid). A healthy man's prostate gland is slightly larger in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can jam up the urine stream, making urination very painful and more difficult and in severe situations totally impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or surgery.

In older males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is referred to as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with medicines or with surgical measures that removes a component of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most common cancers to strike older-aged men and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to pick up prostate cancer early. There is also a blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated pSA blood results could signal disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a physician to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has only recently been noted that medicines such as Docetaxel are effective in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for health-related or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
