The prostate is really a gland that is an important part of the male sexual organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate gland's main role is to produce and then store a see-through liquid that is part of seminal fluid (semen). A healthy individual's prostate is somewhat greater in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is known as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can obstruct the urine stream, making urination painful and difficult and in extreme cases totally impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, massage of the prostate or even operations.

In older men, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is termed bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with prescription medications or with even operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most commonplace cancers that strikes older men and a major cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to discover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a blood evaluation that can measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is also normally quite low. Elevated blood PSA results may indicate a disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause your physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has just recently been noticed that medications like Docetaxel may be useful in treating cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for medical value or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
