The prostate is a component of the masculine sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's most important function is to produce and then store a clear liquid that is a component of semen. A normal human prostate gland is a little bit bigger than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the course of a rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can block the flow of urine, making urination difficult and painful and in very severe cases completely impossible. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or operations.

In older-aged men, the prostate can grow to the point where urination is difficult. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect elderly men and a leading cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also also a laboratory blood evaluation that measures the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Elevated test results can highly suggest disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead your physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has only recently been discovered that drugs such as Docetaxel could be helpful in treating cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical or strictly sexual purposes.
