The prostate is a gland that is a vital part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's most paramount job is to produce and store a transparent fluid that is a component of semen, or seminal fluid. A non-diseased human's prostate is a bit greater in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too large it can occlude the urine stream, making urination very painful and difficult and in severe instances wholly impassable. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or surgical procedures.

In men who are elderly, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is commonly known as bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with prescription medications or with even surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most common cancers that affects older males and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a lab blood test that can measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which can be normally very low. Raised blood PSA results could suggest disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgery. It has recently been detected that medications like Docetaxel may be effective in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical value or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
