The prostate is a vital component of the male sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate. Its chief role is to secrete and then store a see-through liquid that is a vital component of seminal fluid. A non-diseased man's prostate gland is slightly larger than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is located in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can impede urine flow, making urination painful and difficult and in severe situations totally impossible. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or even surgery.

In older-aged males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination is difficult. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with the use of medicines or with operations that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most frequent cancers that strikes older-aged males and a major cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to discover prostate cancer early. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised pSA blood results can be an indicator of disorder inside the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical measures. It has just recently been uncovered that medicines such as Docetaxel can sometimes be useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for medical value or primarily for sexual purposes.
