The prostate gland is part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's paramount function is to secrete and store a clear fluid that is an important part of semen (seminal fluid). A sound human's prostate is somewhat bigger in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal examination.
Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can block the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very severe instances entirely impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or surgical measures.
In elderly males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urinating is difficult. This is termed bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).
Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike elderly men and a leading cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a blood evaluation that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated blood PSA results could signify disease within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause your physician to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgery. It has only recently been found that drugs including Docetaxel could be useful in treating prostate cancer.
Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for health-related or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
