The prostate is a gland that is an important part of the masculine sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate. Its most primary job is to first produce and then store a transparent fluid that is part of seminal fluid or semen. A normal individual's prostate gland is a bit heftier in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the rectal exam.
Inflammation of the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can jam up the urine stream, making urination difficult and very painful and in extreme situations wholly impassable. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic prescription medications, prostate massage or surgery.
In older-aged males, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with the use of medication or with surgical measures that removes part of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).
Prostatic cancer is one of the most frequent cancers to affect older-aged men and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to uncover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a laboratory blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which can be normally quite low. Raised bloodwork PSA results might signal disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead a physician to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even operations. It has just recently been detected that medicines such as Docetaxel can be effective in the treatment of cancer.
Stimulating the prostate gland in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical or for strictly sexual purposes.
