The prostate is really a gland that is a component of the male sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate's principle role is to first secrete and then store a see-through liquid that is a vital part of seminal fluid (semen). Elevated pSA blood results may indicate a disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your doctor to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical procedures. It has recently been noted that medications like Docetaxel are helpful in treating a cancerous prostate.
