The prostate is really a gland that is part of the male sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its most important job is to secrete and then store a transparent liquid that is a vital component of seminal fluid or semen. A sound human's prostate gland is a little bit larger in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is located in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can stop the flow of urine, making urination difficult and painful and in extreme situations wholly impossible. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or even operations.

In older-aged men, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is named bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with medications or with surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers that affects older-aged men and a major cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are recommended to find prostate cancer early. There is also also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Elevated test results might highly suggest disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for a physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical measures. It has only recently been discovered that drugs including Docetaxel could be useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for health-related or just for sexual purposes.
