The prostate is a gland that is a component of the male sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate gland's principle job is to produce and then store a clear fluid that is a vital part of seminal fluid. A non-diseased individual's prostate gland is slightly larger than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the course of a rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too large it can stop up the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very severe instances completely impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or surgery.

In men who are older, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urinating is difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with medicinal drugs or with even surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers that strikes older-aged men and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer early. There is also also a blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised blood PSA results could signal disease inside the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for your physician to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgery. It has only recently been noticed that medications like Docetaxel are useful in treating cancer.
