The prostate gland is a vital component of the masculine sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate gland's most primary function is to produce and store a transparent fluid that is a component of seminal fluid (semen). A healthy man's prostate is a bit bigger than a shelled walnut. In older males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with different types of prescription medications or with even operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostate cancer is one of the most frequent cancers affecting elderly males and a major cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to discover prostate cancer early. There is also also a blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Raised test results can signal disorder in the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for a physician to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgery. It has only recently been uncovered that drugs such as Docetaxel may be useful in treating cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for health-related or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
