The prostate gland is a component of the male sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's paramount job is to secrete and then store a clear liquid that is part of semen. A sound human prostate is a bit greater in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can jam up urine flow, making urination very painful and difficult and in extreme instances wholly impossible. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or surgery.

In elderly males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with different types of medications or with even surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One common surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most common cancers that strikes older men and a major cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to find prostate cancer early. There can be also a laboratory blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be quite low. Raised pSA blood results may signify disease within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause your physician to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has recently been found that medications including Docetaxel can sometimes be useful in treating cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical value or primarily for sexual purposes.
