The prostate is a gland that is a component of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate's most paramount job is to secrete and store a transparent fluid that is an important part of seminal fluid. A healthy man's prostate gland is a little bit heftier in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is known as prostatitis. In men who are older, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with the use of medication or with operations that removes part of the prostate. One very typical operation used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike older-aged men and a major cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are recommended to discover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a blood evaluation that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which can be normally very low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results could signal disease within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for a doctor to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical measures. It has only recently been detected that drugs such as Docetaxel can be helpful in the treatment of cancer.

Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for medical value or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
