The prostate is a gland that is an important part of the masculine sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's primary role is to produce and then store a see-through liquid that is a component of seminal fluid or semen. A non-diseased man's prostate is a bit bigger in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too enlarged it can stop up the urine stream, making urination very painful and more difficult and in extreme instances totally impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or operations.

In older men, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with medicinal drugs or with surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical operation used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers to affect older-aged males and a leading cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to find prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a lab blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which can be normally quite low. Raised test results might suggest disease inside the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for your physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgery. It has just recently been detected that medicines including Docetaxel are useful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate gland in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for medical value or strictly sexual fulfillment.
