The prostate gland is a vital part of the male sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate's leading job is to secrete and store a clear fluid that is a component of seminal fluid (semen). A normal human prostate is a little bit larger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is located in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during a rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can stop up urine flow, making urination painful and difficult and in severe situations wholly impossible. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or surgical procedures.

In elderly males, the prostate may grow to the point where urinating is difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with different types of prescription medications or with operations that removes a component of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike elderly men and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to discover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also also a blood evaluation that can measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Elevated blood PSA results could indicate a disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead a physician to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even operations. It has only recently been found that drugs such as Docetaxel are helpful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical value or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
