The prostate is really a gland that is a component of the male sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate. Its principle role is to produce and store a see-through liquid that is an important part of seminal fluid. A non-diseased man's prostate gland is a bit greater in size than a walnut. In older males, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is named bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medicines or with even surgery that removes part of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect older males and a major cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer early. There is also a laboratory blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Raised test results may signify disorder in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for your doctor to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgery. It has recently been noted that medicines like Docetaxel can be effective in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for medical value or primarily for sexual purposes.
