The prostate is an important part of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate gland's chief function is to first secrete and then store a clear liquid that is part of semen. A healthy individual's prostate is slightly bigger than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the course of the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can impede urine flow, making urination very painful and difficult and in very extreme cases completely impossible. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or surgical measures.

In older-aged males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with medications or with even surgical procedures that removes a component of the prostate. One common surgery used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most frequent cancers affecting older-aged men and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised bloodwork PSA results can signal disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a physician to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even operations. It has just recently been noticed that medications such as Docetaxel can sometimes be helpful in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for health-related or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
