The prostate gland is an important part of the masculine sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate. Its paramount job is to first secrete and then store a transparent fluid that is a vital component of seminal fluid or semen. Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is termed prostatitis. In men who are elderly, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with medications or with even surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that affects older men and a leading cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to uncover prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a blood evaluation that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated test results could signal disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for a doctor to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has just recently been noted that medicines including Docetaxel may be helpful in treating cancer.
