The prostate is part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's most primary role is to secrete and store a clear liquid that is part of semen (seminal fluid). A non-diseased man's prostate gland is a bit heftier in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the course of a rectal examination.
Inflammation in the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can stop the urine stream, making urination difficult and very painful and in extreme instances totally impassable. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or operations.
In men who are older, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is called bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medicinal drugs or with even operations that removes part of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).
Cancer of the prostate is one of the most common cancers affecting older-aged males and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer early. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that can measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is normally very low. Raised pSA blood results might suggest disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause your physician to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has only recently been discovered that drugs like Docetaxel are useful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.
Stimulation of the prostate in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical or primarily for sexual purposes.
