The prostate is really a gland that is part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's leading role is to first secrete and then store a clear fluid that is a component of semen (seminal fluid). A sound human prostate is slightly heftier in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. In men who are older, the prostate may grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with the use of medication or with even operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect older-aged males and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are recommended to pick up prostate cancer early. There can be also a blood evaluation that can measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised pSA blood results might signal disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for your physician to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has just recently been observed that medications such as Docetaxel can sometimes be useful in treating cancer.
