The prostate gland is a vital component of the masculine sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate. Its overriding job is to first produce and then store a transparent liquid that is part of seminal fluid (semen). A healthy human's prostate gland is a little bit larger than a shelled walnut. Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is termed prostatitis. In men who are elderly, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urinating is difficult. This is referred to as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medications or with surgical procedures that removes a component of the prostate. One common operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most common cancers to strike older men and a leading cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to discover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a laboratory blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is also normally very low. Elevated blood PSA results can indicate a disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead a doctor to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has recently been detected that medicines including Docetaxel may be effective in treating prostate cancer.
