The prostate gland is part of the male sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate's principle job is to produce and then store a clear fluid that is an important part of semen (seminal fluid). A healthy individual's prostate gland is a little bit greater in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can occlude the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in severe cases totally impossible. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or even surgical procedures.

In elderly males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is termed bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with surgical measures that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgery used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most common cancers that affects older-aged men and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to uncover prostate cancer early. There can be also a laboratory blood evaluation that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated pSA blood results could indicate a disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for your doctor to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical measures. It has only recently been uncovered that drugs including Docetaxel are helpful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical or strictly sexual purposes.
