The prostate is really a gland that is an important part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate's predominant job is to produce and then store a see-through fluid that is a component of semen (seminal fluid). A sound human prostate is somewhat larger than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can stop urine flow, making urination very painful and more difficult and in extreme cases entirely impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or surgical procedures.

In men who are older, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is named bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with medication or with even surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One common surgery used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike elderly men and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are recommended to uncover prostate cancer early. There is also also a laboratory blood test that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated blood PSA results can suggest disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your doctor to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical measures. It has recently been noted that medicines such as Docetaxel are effective in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical or primarily for sexual purposes.
