The prostate is an important part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate gland's paramount role is to first secrete and then store a see-through fluid that is a component of semen, or seminal fluid. A normal human's prostate is slightly heftier in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the course of the rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can obstruct the flow of urine, making urination painful and difficult and in very extreme instances entirely impassable. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic drugs, prostate massage or surgery.

In older males, the prostate may grow to the point where urination is difficult. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with the use of medicines or with surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers that affects older-aged males and a major cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to uncover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also also a laboratory blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated pSA blood results may be an indicator of disease within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a physician to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical measures. It has only recently been discovered that medications including Docetaxel may be useful in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for medical value or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
