The prostate gland is a vital component of the male sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's most primary job is to first produce and then store a transparent liquid that is part of semen. A sound individual's prostate gland is a bit bigger than a shelled walnut. Inflammation of the prostate gland is called prostatitis. Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most common cancers to affect older males and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to detect prostate cancer early. There can be also a blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Raised test results can signify disorder inside the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for a doctor to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has recently been detected that drugs such as Docetaxel could be helpful in treating prostate cancer.
