The prostate is a component of the male sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate's most primary role is to first produce and then store a clear liquid that is a vital part of semen (seminal fluid). A sound man's prostate is somewhat larger than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is situated in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can occlude the flow of urine, making urination difficult and painful and in extreme cases completely impossible. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or even surgical procedures.

In older men, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with medicinal drugs or with surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgery used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most commonplace cancers that strikes older males and a major cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is also normally very low. Elevated pSA blood results might signify disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for your doctor to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical measures. It has only recently been noticed that medicines including Docetaxel are helpful in treating cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for medical value or primarily for sexual purposes.
