The prostate is an important part of the male sexual organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate's main function is to produce and then store a transparent liquid that is a component of semen. A normal human's prostate gland is a bit bigger than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the course of the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too large it can stop the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very severe cases wholly impassable. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or surgical measures.

In older-aged men, the prostate may grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medication or with operations that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most common cancers to affect older males and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer early. There can be also a lab blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results could highly suggest disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a doctor to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has just recently been discovered that drugs including Docetaxel could be useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for medical value or strictly for sexual purposes.
