The prostate is a gland that is a component of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its most significant function is to secrete and then store a see-through liquid that is a vital component of seminal fluid or semen. A sound man's prostate gland is somewhat larger than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can occlude the flow of urine, making urination painful and difficult and in extreme cases entirely impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or surgery.

In older males, the prostate may grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with different types of medications or with even operations that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most frequent cancers to strike older males and a leading cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which can be normally quite low. Raised pSA blood results might signal disorder in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for a physician to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even operations. It has just recently been observed that drugs including Docetaxel are useful in the treatment of cancer.
