The prostate is really a gland that is an important part of the male sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate's primary role is to produce and store a transparent liquid that is a component of seminal fluid. A normal human prostate is somewhat bigger than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is located in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is termed prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can jam up urine flow, making urination difficult and very painful and in severe situations completely impassable. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or even surgical procedures.

In older-aged men, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with medication or with surgery that removes part of the prostate. One common surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most commonplace cancers that affects older-aged males and a major cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are recommended to discover prostate cancer early. There is also a lab blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Raised blood PSA results can be an indicator of disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause a doctor to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has only recently been noticed that medicines such as Docetaxel can be effective in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical value or strictly sexual purposes.
