The prostate gland is part of the masculine sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate. The prostate's principle job is to produce and then store a clear fluid that is a vital part of seminal fluid (semen). A sound man's prostate gland is a little bit heftier in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is also located in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during a rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can impede the urine stream, making urination very painful and more difficult and in extreme instances entirely impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or surgical procedures.

In elderly males, the prostate can grow to the point where urination is difficult. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with the use of prescription medications or with even surgery that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting older-aged males and a major cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to find prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that can measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is also normally very low. Raised test results could indicate a disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgery. It has just recently been noted that drugs such as Docetaxel can sometimes be helpful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
