The prostate is a gland that is a vital component of the sex organs of the male. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. Its predominant function is to first secrete and then store a transparent liquid that is an important part of semen. A healthy individual's prostate is slightly greater in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can block the flow of urine, making urination very painful and difficult and in very extreme situations totally impassable. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or surgical measures.

In men who are older, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with even surgical procedures that removes a component of the prostate. One common operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most frequent cancers to affect older men and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer early. There is also a laboratory blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results may suggest disorder inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your physician to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical measures. It has only recently been detected that medications including Docetaxel could be useful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for health-related or primarily for sexual purposes.
