The prostate is really a gland that is a vital part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's predominant function is to produce and then store a clear fluid that is part of seminal fluid (semen). A normal man's prostate is a little bit larger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can stop the urine stream, making urination difficult and painful and in severe instances wholly impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or even surgery.

In older men, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medicines or with even operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike older men and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to detect prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a blood evaluation that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Raised pSA blood results may suggest disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause your doctor to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical measures. It has just recently been noticed that drugs such as Docetaxel can sometimes be helpful in treating cancer.
