The prostate is a gland that is a component of the male sexual organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate's primary role is to first produce and then store a see-through liquid that is a vital component of seminal fluid. A sound individual's prostate gland is slightly heftier in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is located in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the course of a rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is known as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can block the flow of urine, making urination difficult and painful and in extreme situations completely impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or surgical procedures.

In older-aged men, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with medication or with operations that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most common cancers affecting older-aged males and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to find prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a blood test that measures the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated blood PSA results can signal disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for a physician to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has recently been found that medicines including Docetaxel can sometimes be effective in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
