The prostate is part of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. Its paramount role is to secrete and store a transparent fluid that is a vital part of semen, or seminal fluid. A healthy human's prostate is a bit heftier in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is termed prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too large it can impede urine flow, making urination painful and difficult and in very severe cases totally impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or even operations.

In older-aged males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with even surgery that removes part of the prostate. One common operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers that affects elderly men and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to uncover prostate cancer early. There is also a lab blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results could suggest disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead a doctor to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgery. It has recently been detected that drugs such as Docetaxel may be helpful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for health-related or just for sexual purposes.
