The prostate gland is a vital component of the male sex organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised blood PSA results could indicate a disorder inside the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for your physician to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even operations. It has just recently been detected that medications like Docetaxel can be helpful in treating prostate cancer.
