The prostate is a gland that is part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's most significant role is to produce and then store a clear liquid that is a component of seminal fluid. A non-diseased human's prostate gland is slightly greater in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during a rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can stop up the flow of urine, making urination painful and difficult and in extreme situations completely impassable. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or even operations.

In elderly males, the prostate may grow to the point where urinating is difficult. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with medication or with operations that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers affecting older-aged men and a major cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood test that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which can be normally very low. Elevated test results might be an indicator of disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for your doctor to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has only recently been found that medicines like Docetaxel could be effective in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for health-related or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
