The prostate gland is a component of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. Its most paramount job is to secrete and then store a see-through fluid that is a vital component of seminal fluid (semen). A normal human's prostate gland is a bit larger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is located in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can block the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very severe instances entirely impossible. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic drugs, prostate massage or surgical procedures.

In older men, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with the use of medicines or with surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most frequent cancers to affect elderly males and a major cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to pick up prostate cancer in the early stages. There can be also a blood evaluation that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Elevated test results might signal disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause a doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or operations. It has recently been observed that medicines such as Docetaxel may be useful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or strictly sexual fulfillment.
