The prostate is a vital part of the male sex organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate's paramount role is to secrete and store a see-through fluid that is an important part of semen (seminal fluid). A non-diseased human prostate is a little bit bigger in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is known as prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can impede the urine stream, making urination painful and difficult and in extreme cases totally impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or even surgical procedures.

In elderly males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medicines or with even operations that removes part of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers to strike older-aged men and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised blood PSA results could be an indicator of disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgery. It has only recently been found that medicines including Docetaxel are effective in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical value or just for sexual purposes.
