The prostate gland is part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its predominant job is to first produce and then store a transparent fluid that is a component of semen. A healthy individual's prostate is somewhat larger than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can stop the flow of urine, making urination difficult and very painful and in extreme instances completely impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic drugs, prostate massage or even surgery.

In older males, the prostate can grow to the point where urination is difficult. This is commonly known as bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers that affects older men and a major cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to uncover prostate cancer in the early stages. There can be also a lab blood test that can measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Elevated blood PSA results can signify disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for a doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even operations. It has recently been discovered that drugs such as Docetaxel can be helpful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical value or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
