The prostate is a gland that is a component of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. Its main role is to first produce and then store a see-through liquid that is a vital component of semen, or seminal fluid. A sound man's prostate is a little bit larger than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can hinder the flow of urine, making urination difficult and painful and in very extreme instances totally impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotics, massage of the prostate or surgery.

In men who are elderly, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with prescription medications or with surgical measures that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most frequent cancers to affect older men and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to detect prostate cancer early. There is also also a blood evaluation that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Raised bloodwork PSA results may signal disease within the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead a physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has just recently been uncovered that medicines including Docetaxel can sometimes be useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for medical value or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
