The prostate is really a gland that is a vital component of the male sex organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate's leading function is to produce and store a see-through fluid that is a vital component of seminal fluid or semen. A sound individual's prostate gland is somewhat bigger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is also located in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during the course of a rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can jam up the urine stream, making urination difficult and painful and in extreme instances wholly impossible. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic prescription medications, prostate massage or operations.

In older-aged men, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with different types of prescription medications or with even surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most common cancers that strikes elderly males and a leading cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to pick up prostate cancer early. There is also a lab blood test that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is normally quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results may highly suggest disorder inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause your physician to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical procedures. It has only recently been observed that drugs such as Docetaxel are useful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm.
