The prostate is a gland that is part of the masculine sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. Its principle role is to first produce and then store a clear fluid that is a component of seminal fluid (semen). A normal man's prostate is slightly bigger in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is known as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too enlarged it can stop up urine flow, making urination painful and difficult and in severe instances completely impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic drugs, prostate massage or surgical measures.

In men who are elderly, the prostate can grow to the point where urination is difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with medicinal drugs or with even surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most common cancers that affects older-aged males and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to find prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a blood test that can measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be quite low. Raised blood PSA results can suggest disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for your doctor to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or operations. It has only recently been noticed that drugs including Docetaxel may be helpful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
