The prostate is really a gland that is an important part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate gland's primary function is to secrete and store a transparent liquid that is a component of semen (seminal fluid). A non-diseased human prostate gland is a bit heftier in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can hinder urine flow, making urination difficult and painful and in very extreme cases entirely impassable. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or surgery.

In older-aged males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with even operations that removes part of the prostate. One very typical operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect elderly men and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results might signal disorder inside the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead a physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical measures. It has just recently been found that medications such as Docetaxel can sometimes be useful in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical value or primarily for sexual purposes.
