The prostate gland is part of the masculine sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate's overriding role is to produce and then store a clear fluid that is an important part of seminal fluid. A sound human's prostate is a little bit larger in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during a rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can impede the urine stream, making urination very painful and difficult and in extreme instances totally impassable. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic prescription medications, prostate massage or even surgery.

In older-aged men, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination is difficult. This is known as bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with medications or with surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most common cancers that strikes elderly men and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to uncover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also also a blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised blood PSA results could be an indicator of disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for a doctor to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even operations. It has recently been detected that medications like Docetaxel may be effective in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate gland in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for medical value or just for sexual purposes.
