The prostate gland is a vital part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. Its chief job is to first secrete and then store a see-through fluid that is a vital part of semen. A normal human prostate gland is a little bit bigger than a shelled walnut. In men who are older, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urinating is difficult. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with the use of medicines or with even surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most commonplace cancers affecting older males and a major cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to pick up prostate cancer early. There is also a blood evaluation that can measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is normally very low. Raised test results may indicate a disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgery. It has just recently been noted that medicines like Docetaxel can be useful in treating cancer.
