The prostate is a gland that is a component of the male sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's most primary function is to secrete and then store a transparent liquid that is part of semen, or seminal fluid. A non-diseased human's prostate is somewhat larger than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is situated in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during the course of the rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can jam up the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very extreme cases totally impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or surgical procedures.

In older men, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with different types of prescription medications or with surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most frequent cancers to strike older-aged men and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a lab blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results could signify disorder in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgery. It has only recently been found that drugs such as Docetaxel are helpful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for medical value or primarily for sexual purposes.
