The prostate is an important part of the masculine sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. Its main job is to produce and then store a transparent fluid that is an important part of semen (seminal fluid). A healthy man's prostate gland is a bit larger in size than a shelled walnut. There is also a lab blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is normally quite low. Elevated blood PSA results can signify disorder inside the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead your physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or operations. It has only recently been detected that medicines like Docetaxel can sometimes be useful in the treatment of cancer.
